Nouakchott Taxis - None of the taxis are metered, and although some prices are standard, you should always discuss the price before getting into the taxi to avoid embarassing or frusting situations upon arrival at your destination! "Route" taxis run along a fixed path and fill up with five passengers. (Route taxis cost 50 UM and buses cost 30 UM.) Otherwise you can command taxis for other travels; these are referred to as "Course" taxis.

Some examples:
Fabric: Fabric can be found almost anywhere and volunteers can be quite creative in their use of it! Good traditional tie-dye can be found with the Pulaar and Soninke women in Cinquieme market, and in Kaedi. Mulafas are best in Capital makret, if not in the interior. The Lebanese vendors, whose boutiques are clustered in a row across from the Capitale market building, carry an extensive selection of fabrics similar to waht you might prefer in the States . . . makes for great copying of ideas from the pages of magazines...

These prices are not exact. Most items are more expensive in the interior, due to shipping costs. Bargaining is acceptable and expected. Be willing to walk away and you might just get the price you want - if not, the next shop has the same stuff!
